Renesas Technology has announced the HA31010 2.4 GHz/5 GHz dual-band SiGe MMIC*1 as a power amplifier for wireless LAN terminal transmission power amplification. A 2.4 GHz band amplifier circuit supporting the IEEE802.11b/g*2 wireless LAN standards and a 5 GHz band amplifier circuit supporting the IEEE802.11a*2 standard are incorporated in a single chip, providing dual-band operation. This enables an approximately 40% reduction in mounting area to be achieved compared with the use of two separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Renesas SiGe MMICs. The HA31010 achieves gain together with the lowest current dissipation level for an SiGe MMIC, with figures of 28 dB power gain and 130 mA current dissipation for 2.4 GHz band use, and 24 dB power gain and 160 mA current dissipation for 5 GHz band use. Wireless LAN devices that actively implement low power consumption require an automatic output power control function that provides the minimum output power necessary for performing communication. The HA31010 incorporates an output power detector circuit as a sensor for this function, enabling the number of parts to be reduced and the mounting board to be made smaller. Sample shipments will begin in Japan in June 2006.
