The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued patent number 6,704,651, entitled "Method and Apparatus for Locating Mobile Receivers Using a Wide Area Reference Network for Propagating Ephemeris," to Global Locate Inc., a global leader in assisted-GPS (A-GPS) products and services.
This new patent covers sending ephemeris to a mobile receiver, where the ephemeris is used to reduce code and frequency uncertainty to enhance receiver sensitivity. CEO Scott D. Pomerantz noted, "This is a fundamental patent for assisted-GPS systems that operate in MS-Based mode. The invention allows ephemeris to be used to obtain high sensitivity in much the way that time and frequency aiding is used in current A-GPS deployments that operate in MS-Assisted mode."
The MS-Based mode of operation has the added benefit that the handset computes position locally and can provide a high update rate for real-time navigation. The combination of high sensitivity and accurate real-time navigation is a hallmark of Global Locate GPS.
