Zilog Inc. has extended its Infra-Red (IR) code database with Universal Remote Controls codes from ViewSonic Corp., a leading global provider of visual display products, including LCD TVs and plasmas. Zilog has incorporated compatibility with select ViewSonic products, including the recently introduced N3250w LCD TV, into its Universal Remote Control (URC) database. Zilog's URC solution gives ViewSonic access to the most comprehensive device code set database available anywhere, containing more than 145,000 unique key codes covering over 12,000 models and 1,300 brands. The large number and range of the codes contained in the database ensures unrivaled global compatibility for URC vendors with ViewSonic products. In the last two years alone Zilog has acquired codes from more than 3,500 new remote controls.

"This is an exciting development for Zilog," noted James Thorburn, chairman and CEO, Zilog. "It reinforces our leadership in the URC marketplace and underscores our ongoing commitment to delivering innovation that works and produces tangible benefits for our partners and customers. Not only do we possess the most comprehensive infrared code set database in the market, but our microcontroller and design expertise, particularly in the URC market, is innovative yet simple, complete and designed to speed time-to-market for our customers."

"Not only does Zilog offer the most comprehensive IR code database," said Jeff Volpe, vice president of marketing, ViewSonic. "The simplicity and usability of their universal remote controls will further enhance the visual experience of ViewSonic LCD TV display products and their integration with industry standard systems."

Zilog is unique in the MCU industry in that it offers a full turnkey solution for IR remote control projects called "Remote on a Chip." This solution pulls together all the elements required to execute a successful MCU project for the IR remote control market under one umbrella. So, in addition to its portfolio of IR-specific silicon, Zilog also offers one of the most comprehensive IR code set databases in the industry, a wide selection of application-specific firmware and software, development tools and design and engineering services, all tailored to the customer's individual requirements. This full service capability sets Zilog apart from its competitors.

Zilog's URC solutions are powered by its Crimzon microcontrollers, built on the popular Z8 architecture. To further aid and speed up product development and the debugging process, Zilog offers an in-circuit emulator (or ICE) kit for its Crimzon microcontrollers, providing full chip emulation, a trace and event system for program debugging using Zilog's ZDS II development tools and Crimzon development platform.

In addition, the Crimzon RC Express tool, a new configurable and scalable UIR application designed to be used in conjunction with Zilog's ICE kit, is available. Together, they provide customers with a complete software development environment for developing UIR control units for numerous brands and models of devices including TV sets, VCR and DVD players and recorders, satellite, cable and set top boxes, and audio units. RC Express works with Zilog's ZLP32300 family of OTP-based IR microcontrollers and can be developed and customized using the Crimzon ZLP323ICE01ZEM ICE development kit.
