Lenovo has adopted Silicon Laboratories Inc.'s Si4300 power amplifier (PA) and Aero II transceiver for dual-band GSM mobile handsets. By selecting the Si4300 and Aero II transceiver, Lenovo significantly reduced the board space and overall bill-of-materials (BOM) required to implement the entire radio section of its GSM handsets.
The Si4300 reduces both board space and component count by more than 70% when compared to other solutions. Unlike PA modules, which are composed of multiple die and numerous discretes, the Si4300 uses a single die on a small substrate ¡X making it the industry's smallest GSM PA solution and the first functionally-complete monolithic GSM PA solution. Manufactured using TSMC's standard 0.35-µm CMOS process, the Si4300 is also the first GSM PA solution to be implemented in CMOS.
In addition, the Aero II transceiver offers a unique combination of superior integration and performance that exceeds the stringent GSM/GPRS market requirements allowing companies like Lenovo to deliver world-class performance on critical handset parameters such as sensitivity, which ultimately results in expanded network coverage and fewer dropped calls.

Based on new, patented amplifier architecture, the Si4300 integrates all functions between the transceiver and the antenna switch module, including complete power control circuitry, thermal and load mismatch protection, harmonic filtering and input and output matching networks. The very small BOM makes it easy to design into a handset. The monolithic GSM 900/DCS 1800 PA solution is available in a small (3.9 x 6.4 x 1.3 mm) surface-mount package.
The Aero II transceiver is the smallest, highest performance, most integrated, easiest to use and manufacture transceiver for GSM/GPRS ultra-low-cost handsets. The Aero II transceiver enables handset manufacturers to meet market requirements of lower BOM and faster time-to-market and has been widely adopted across production handset platforms. The Aero II transceiver also serves as a fundamental building block for supporting EDGE platforms. |
